Ideas for Creative Writers

Attention creative writers! There is only ONE month left for the creative writing competition, and yet there are still several people that are still questioning what they want to write. The following is a list of ideas to get the creative juices flowing!

  1. Brain dump. Even if you have a tiny idea, just ramble on about it as much as you can. While this method probably won’t get you to a fully developed story, it can help create a great base.
  2. Join the Creative Writing Club! Though the exact opening date has yet to be set in stone, the club leaders plan for it to start in October. New members can receive comments and constructive criticism that can help them improve their writing.
  3. Make an account on creative writing based websites. For example, reedsy.com gives writing courses (both free and paid), various prompts, weekly contests, and editing tools. In fact, contest winners can earn $250!
  4. Make random characters. Even if you don’t have any stories in mind when creating them, the more effort you put into them, the more attached you will get. Perhaps, after some time, you may start to make connecting backstories for your characters, which can eventually lead to a full story.
  5. Look at fan works for content you are interested in. Yes, that includes terrible fanfictions (it’s ok, we get it). Fan works are some of the closest things you may find to a raw, unedited drafts of your favorite novels. Take note of every time you cringe or say “that character wouldn’t do that” because they can serve as a lesson for your own writing; you may notice your inconsistent character designs or incomprehensible pacing. Do not get discouraged! It is all part of the learning process, and what better way to learn than from the mistake of others (especially mistakes in fanfiction)?

Writing is a long (and often tiring) process, but in the end, there is often a sense of self-fulfillment that comes from creating and sharing your own world. As long as that world exists, keep on writing! Good luck to all writers on the competition! 🙂
