Foreign languages provide a method for people of different cultures to develop bonds and value other perspectives. Even though several initiatives have been set out to improve language learning (such as college requirements and the Georgia biliteracy seal), many people do not know how to proceed with learning a new language. The following is a summary of an interview with Sr. Veléz, one of our Spanish teachers, that gives insight into the process.
Question
For people who are trying to learn a new language, where should they start?
Key Points
Immersion is the best form of language learning, such as traveling to a city that speaks the language or taking a class. Regarding the latter method, students could borrow textbooks from the Spanish classes or join study groups for the language of interest. If joining a class is not possible, students should find clubs where the language of interest is spoken and make friends.
Question
What level of effort should be used to learn Spanish in a reasonable time? At that level, when do you think that people can become fluent?
Key Points
To learn fast, a student should try studying for two hours each day then taking one hour to apply those skills through conversation, writing, or listening. For Spanish, it should take about six months to gain fluency with constant learning.
Question
In your opinion, what are some of the most important languages to learn?
Key Points
Spanish, French, and Portuguese are very prevalent languages due to the proximity of Latin America and Canada.
Do not be afraid to ask the language teachers for advice about learning languages. They are more than likely willing to help and give guidance for the proper resources. Language learning provides one of the best ways to understand other cultures, so take advantage of the opportunity.
