On November 13th, Kennesaw Mountain’s math team faced off against different Cobb County high schools at the Cobb County Winter Tournament. The event was sponsored and set up by Mrs. Cannon and Dr. Stockton, who are both Kennesaw Mountain math teachers.
Beginning at 5:30pm, the math team participated in a pre-Covid style competition; in contrast to the newer competition version–which has a ciphering* portion, a team round**, and a written test***—the older test only has a ciphering round and written test. Varsity started the 10-question ciphering round first, while Junior Varsity took a written test. After both sides finished, Varsity and Junior Varsity switched round events.
At 6:30pm, students were released from the competition. While results will not come out for at least a month, Kennesaw Mountain can rest assured that everyone in their math team tried and did their best.
“Overall, I think it went really well,” Dr. Stockton, one of the co-hosts said. “Everyone had fun and it [the competition] was really smooth.”
*Ciphering: A speed round where competitors individually try to solve problems as quick as possible to earn the maximum amount of points
**Team Round: In a group of 3 or 4, students from the same school will attempt to solve 10 problems in 10 minutes.
***Written Test: A timed test where competitors individually took a 45-minute, 25-question, calculator-allowed test covering various topics.
