As the warmer temperatures signal the end of winter, the time approaches for students to begin applying to summer programs. Over the next few weeks, several articles will be released about upcoming summer programs.
Georgia Tech’s Science, Technology, and Engineering Pipeline (STEP)
From July 7th to 18th, the Georgia Institute of Technology offers an engineering summer program to students 16 and over. For two weeks, students will go to the Georgia Tech campus daily to design a solution to a presented challenge problem with a team of other high school students before presenting their findings on the last day of the program.
This opportunity offers STEM-interested students the opportunity to acquire hands-on experience with the engineering process and develop their collaboration skills in a low-risk environment.
The enrollment deadline is March 9th. Applicants must provide basic personal information, list previous STEM experiences, and upload a resume. Results will be announced by April 4th.
If students decide to apply, they should consider transportation to and from the campus as well as their meals. For more questions, applicants can contact [email protected] or visit the official website.
University of Georgia’s B.L.A.C.K. Engineering Camp
At the University of Georgia’s College of Engineering, underrepresented students between 15 to 17 can enjoy a week-long residential program from June 9th to June 13th. During this time, students will attend classes from 9am to 3:30pm to learn the ethical engineering design process, develop communication and analysis skills, and gain science and math skills.
The program is completely free, and there is no requirement to have previous skills, so students have a fair chance of entering. The application period has yet to open but will close by March 31st. Results will be announced by April 12th.
Furthermore, 25 campers from the program will have an opportunity to receive a full scholarship to the UGA College of Engineering by filling out this form. For more questions, contact the Summer Academy Camp Office at [email protected] or visit the official website.
Beaver Works Summer Institute
Despite having a rigorous set of requirements to apply, the Beaver Works Summer Institute hosted by the MIT Lincoln Laboratory and MIT’s School of Engineering offers a wide array of quality STEM courses for freshmen, sophomores, and juniors. From July 7th to August 3, students can participate in various courses, including Autonomous Air Vehicle Racing, Embedded Security and Hardware Hacking, and more.
The application window is open from March 1st to March 31st, and chosen applicants will be notified on May 1st. However, to participate in the program, students must also complete specific online courses, which they can register for on the official website.
Unlike the other programs, however, the BWSI is not free for all students. Families earning more than $150,000 per year will have to pay a $2,350 fee. Combined with the fact that some courses do no provide housing, students should carefully consider this option with their families.
