First CFP Ranking

This season of college football has created a wild frenzy among fans with its unexpected craziness. Most thought that this year would’ve been a two-team race between the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Clemson Tigers. It would be smart to say that this is not how it has been the first 11 weeks of college football. The Clemson Tigers have been a disappointment in terms of fans’ standards. They have not been as dominant as they were when they defeated Alabama Crimson Tide by 28 in the CFP Championship in January. The Crimson Tide have had a few scary moments throughout the season, including losing their star quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa, due to injury. There have also been a few surprisingly good teams around the country. Ohio State has been dominant over the Big Ten Conference with their two Heisman Trophy candidates of Justin Fields and Chase Young. LSU has also been dominant with Heisman Trophy candidate of Joe Burrow. The red shirt senior phenomenon has had an incredible season. Over the season, he’s accumulated 2,805 passing yards with 30 touchdowns and only 4 interceptions. Penn State has been quite impressive with Sean Clifford as their quarterback. Of course, Georgia has also been good with their big wins over Notre Dame and the Florida Gators, but their loss to South Carolina has left them out of the conversation to the be one of the top 4 teams in the country, for now. With all this considered, the ranking was projected to be LSU at the one spot, Alabama at two, Ohio State at three and Clemson to round out the top four. The actual CFP ranking had a lot people surprised. It had Ohio State at one, LSU at the two position, Alabama at 3, and Penn State to finish off the top four with Clemson at five and UGA at six. The placement of Penn State over Clemson was questionable but, it was understood, as Clemson has had no quality wins while Penn State had defeated Michigan a few weeks ago. Keep in mind though, that these rankings could change drastically as the weeks go on, because this week LSU and Alabama face off in Tuscaloosa and later in the season, Ohio State and Penn State will have a game which will have major repercussions on the CFP rankings. Also, UGA has pretty much locked their shot to the SEC championship where they could boost their ranking. This first ranking was important to see what losses and what wins the committee appreciated over others; and that’s exactly what we saw with these rankings. While this ranking has come to a shock for a lot of people, with the marquee matchups in mind these rankings can change so much that there is a possibility that Ohio State won’t even be in the top four by the end of the season, and that’s the craziness of college football that so many people enjoy.
