Our very own Kennesaw Mountain Drama Department took home the title for the State One-Act Play Competition in Warner Robins on November 12 against 44 of the largest high schools in Georgia. This is the first time in 6 years that Kennesaw Mountain has won a state championship for the One-Act Play.
Kennesaw Mountain presented the heart-warming comedy, The Boys Next Door, by Tom Griffin after winning their 3–7A region beating Hillgrove, North Cobb, McEachern, and North Paulding for the opportunity to advance to the state competition. The play is a comedy-drama, portraying the lives of four mentally challenged men and the emotional toll it takes on their caretaker.
Lucien’s moving monologue showed the depth to which the actor, senior Matt DeLeon, immersed himself in his role engaged and brought tears to the audience’s eyes, earning him the honor of Region Best Actor. Normon adored his keys, as actor Ashton Arnold made clear. Barry was a comic throughout the play, but when it came time, actor Nick Haddad displayed his range of acting abilities. Arnold’s opening monologue reeled the audience in; actor Landon Ebuna did it best. Actor Carson Colenbaugh achieved the impressive task of switching from narrator to immersing himself in the scene as caretaker Jack. Senior Landon Ebuna and junior Carson Colenbaugh were both selected to the Region All-Star Cast.
Director Coy Dunn said, “I am extremely proud of this group. They have worked hard and continuous improved week after week. They are a very talented group of actors, but they are also an awesome group of young people. It’s been a lot of fun getting to work with them.”
